In a remarkable turn of events, durian has become Vietnam's top fruit export, outshining the long-reigning leader, dragon fruit, with an incredible tenfold growth in the first five months of the year.
According to recent statistics from the General Department of Customs, the total export revenue of fruits and vegetables in the first six months reached USD 2.75 billion, a significant increase of over 64% compared to the previous year. During this period, durian emerged as the leader, generating over USD 526 million in export revenue, a remarkable tenfold surge from the previous year.

The surge in durian exports is attributed to the high demand in the Chinese market. Vietnam's agreement to export durian to China has opened up new opportunities and favorable conditions for trade. Moreover, Vietnam's competitive pricing has made its durian increasingly popular among consumers.
This notable achievement of durian surpassing dragon fruit is being celebrated as a "miracle" in the industry. Just last year, durian brought in only USD 420 million in export revenue, while dragon fruit dominated with nearly USD 633 million. For years, dragon fruit had held the title of Vietnam's top fruit export.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, the Secretary-General of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, predicts that durian's export revenue is expected to reach USD 1.2 billion this year and may even hit USD 2 billion in the next 1-2 years.
The competition in fruit exports, particularly between durian and dragon fruit, reflects the dynamic nature of Vietnam's agricultural trade, highlighting the growing influence of Vietnamese fruits in global markets.
Moreover, bananas, mangoes, and jackfruits rank third, fourth, and fifth, respectively, in terms of Vietnam's largest fruit exports, with export revenues reaching USD 172 million, USD 116 million, and USD 109 million in the first five months of this year.
